Christmas is actually a fairly recent term used to describe the celebration of Jesus birth for the Christian faith. The older Germanic term Yule came from the pagan celebration of the winter solstice. In fact much of the celebration of Christmas comes from pagan origins. Even the idea that Jesus was born on December 25th is historically unlikely, it is believed the date was chosen to replace and more accurately absorb existing pagan celebrations surrounding the winter solstice.
