The Stoned Ape Theory was first proposed by Terrence McKenna in his book “The Food of the Gods” in 1992. The controversial theory proposes that the ‘so far unexplained’ cognitive jump in human evolution was cause the consumption of psilocybin mushrooms. Not only did this psychedelic dietary change cause the jump in cognition but he claims it also helped make mankind more sociable and start early religion.
