The Salem Witch Trials

The Salem Witch Trials occurred in Salem Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. It was a series of events involving over 200 people accused of Witchcraft; 30 were found guilty, 19 executed by hanging, 1 died by torture, and at least 5 died in jail.

Many speculations have been made as what lead to these events. One interesting theory is that of ergot poisoning. A naturally occurring fungus with LSD properties. It could have infected the towns crop and lead to mass hallucinations. This may have excited an already witch scarred puritan peoples to see hallucinations of witchcraft.
