We first learn about Atlantis from Plato’s republic, around 375 BCE. Though it was of minor importance in Plato’s work, the Atlantis story has had a tremendous impact on literature and the imagination of millions. The allegorical aspect of Atlantis was taken up in utopian works of several Renaissance writers, such as Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis and Thomas More’s Utopia.
Most historians believe the story to be allegorical and that the empire of Atlantis never actually existed. However fragments of a tale inscribed in pillars at the Temple of Edfu seem to support Platos writings about a lost civilization that was destroyed by a cataclysm, with some . Perhaps the specific inscription containing the exact Atlantis story Plato referred to is yet to be found.
